I still haven't done much about moving, but I will. Saw this today - kind of an oddity, I guess: a busy site, but low numbers for a social site, apparently. Maybe all the hits registering were those damn spambots. Actually, it seems that most of the sites mentioning the...

I believe the consensus is FREAK OUT AND BE PISSED OFF

Yeah, that's pretty much how I'm feeling right now. I'm gonna go check out Tumblr (someone recommended it, saying it is kind of community like).

and I just realized - what about the fun posts and stuff that were group only about the couple of vox get-togethers??
Posted by: arbed | 09/02/2010 at 03:01 PM
WAH! Oh noes!!!

Well, one thing we could do to supplement the blog community thing is maybe a Yahoo or Gmail group?
I, however, am willing to try spearheading a plan to create a central spot for links to all the Vox bloggers who move elsewhere. So we can at least keep track of each other.

I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend...

those would be gone unless the author backs them up.
Posted by: LeendaDLL | 09/02/2010 at 03:16 PM
yep, that's what I figured - and being the owner of two, I guess I'd better export those, too, just in case

Sad sad sad :-(
If you're not a TypePad fan, WordPress now imports Vox blogs - you can either import to a WordPress.com hosted blog, or use the Vox import plugin to import to a self-hosted wordpress blog.
Details on how to do it are here . I'd recommend doing it even if you're not planning to blog there, as it's a good place to have a backup and you CAN export from their blog to a file that you can then transfer somewhere else...something you won't be able to do with Vox in a month.
Tumblr is fun and sort of community-like but it really doesn't replace the blogging platform. Not sure about Blogger as I've seen some good things there, but it always seemed a little quirky.

I think that I'll try to do two or three exports, just to see which imports best. I had a short-lived WordPress blog and I never did get used to it. No choice but to try them all, now.
Posted by: arbed | 09/02/2010 at 03:21 PM
Sorry, my not-quite-so-clear point is if you transfer to a WordPress blog and then do their "export" tool, you'll end up with a file that you can download to your computer that all the big name blogging sites should be able to read and import. So even if you don't stick with WordPress, you'll at least be able to transition from there to somewhere else.
As a bonus, WordPress will grab any pictures you have on your Vox blog and store them on your new WordPress blog, so you'll still have them available too. I know SA is giving a guide to export to flickr, but not everyone wants them up on a photo sharing site like that, especially if you have to pay to go Pro to get all of your photos saved.

DUDE. what the hell?
i'm so glad you told me! now I have to figure out where to archive my 5 years of writing ....

Wtf! NO! Gah!*sigh*I’m against Blogger...not a fan of Google, would rather stay off their radar as much as possible. Soooo...that’s my two cents. I have a different blog over on Wordpress, but I haven’t seen various privacy settings over there. Time to do some research..

I haven't tried typepad but I didn't like blogger--I have a wordpress blog for my knitting and it seems to do okay. Is there any sort of neighborhood feature for wordpress?
Posted by: Peg of Tilling | 09/02/2010 at 03:36 PM
So far, I'm not liking Tumblr.... I'm a bit confused by it already.
And they don't have a "neighborhood only" option, where only the people you want to read can read. I like that option (as do all my in-person friends who don't care to share their info with the rest of the world, and me with my rants about work).

Here's something that was suggested to me that a few peeps already do - make your blog wherever you wish, but feed them through FaceBook so people know you've got a new post. And FB does have some controls regarding who sees what.
Posted by: arbed | 09/02/2010 at 03:43 PM
Yes, that's a pretty solid approach. You'll be doing "self-promotion" so people know where/when you have something new on your blog, at least until people bookmark the site or subscribe in RSS, but it means you don't have to be restricted to one tiny community somewhere and hope all your fellow Vox peeps join there too!
Posted by: Ross | 09/02/2010 at 04:24 PM
The only sucky thing about that is not getting to click "Your Neighborhood" and see everyone's recent posts/updates. That's one feature I really like about Vox.
WordPress looks better than Tumblr (to me, anyway), so far.

omg. I'm stunned... but not. Have to catch my breath.
Posted by: jaypo | 09/02/2010 at 05:36 PM
Curiously, I'm relieved. I haven't been able to access Vox' front page for a year, I'm tired of porn posts being 'favorited'...might be time to go.
I know of 3 alternatives: Blogger, Typepad, Wordpress. I'll start from there and...who knows where I'll end?
Question, though...for Vox, you have to register to comment; is that the policy for these other 3 formats?

Ok. I am taking many deep breaths and getting ready to move to WP for now.
I will have to wait until after work tomorrow, though. I'm writing down as much info (emails, websites) on all you guys as possible so I can keep in touch!
Posted by: Lauri | 09/02/2010 at 06:22 PM
This is weird! I can't post to anyone else so it seems! That's a switch. I signed up for WP, but still have to figure it out.

I will be in touch soon.
